Astounding Facts about the Universe

The universe is so big and mysterious so take a little bit and do some research about it, you will be amazed with how much is truly out there. Here are just some facts about the universe that you might not know.



  • Did you know there are more than 170 moons in our solar system? Mercury=0, Venus=0, Earth=1, Mars=2, Jupiter=63, Saturn=63, Uranus=27, Neptune=13
  • Did you know the biggest known diamond in the universe is a star called Lucy? The white dwarf has a carbon interior that crystallized as it was cooling, which caused it to become a giant diamond in the sky.
  • The Crab Nebula is the most famous and conspicuous known supernova remnant. ┬áThe constellation of the taurus. 6,523 light years away from earth.
  • The largest structure found in the universe is the Sloan Great Wall. this is a supercluster of galaxies, 1.37 billion light-years across
  • The String Theory- what appears to be empty space is actually a tumultuous ocean of strings vibrating at the precis frequencies that create the 4 dimensions height, width, depth and time (Roy H. Williams)
  • The Seven Sisters of the Pleiades– in greek mythology the seven sisters are Maia, Electra, Alcyone, Taygete,Asterope, Celaeno and Merope. They are said to be the daughters of Atlas, the titan who held up the sky and the oceanid Pleione
  • The 9th Planet?- Nasa recently released that they believe there is a ninth planet in our solar system, with a mass of ten times more than the Earth’s. Although there is barely any evidence of its existence most scientists are absolutely convinced its there.
  • Scientists have traced an unusual radio signal being emitted from an unknown object in the Galaxy M82. scientist believe its lifetime is well over a year now.
  • Phenomenons that will be seen in 2018- January 31=super moon, February 15th= Solar Eclipse, March 2nd & 31st= Blue moon, April 16-25= Lyrids meteor shower, May 6&7= Halley’s Comet Tear (remains of the comet), July=Red Moon, August 12-13= Perseids Meteor Shower, October 2= Orionids meteor shower, November 17-18= Leonid meteor shower, December 7th&17th= Geminids meteor shower.
  • Venus spins in the opposite direction to most planets. Venus rotates clockwise while all the other planets rotate counterclockwise.
  • The solar system rotates around the galaxy once every 225 million years. The last time we were in our current position, dinosaurs were just beginning to walk the earth.
  • Did you know a new star is born in our galaxy roughly every 18 days?
  • The heaviest star in the Universe is dame R136a1 this star also is the most luminous
  • If the age of the universe is compared to a year of earth, the Great Pyramids of egypt were built 10.5 seconds ago.
  • A venus day is longer than an earth’s year
